Copenhagen at Halloween

Copenhagen’s Christmas markets get all the attention, and the city’s other big seasonal event — the Halloween season at Tivoli Gardens — gets almost none from foreign visitors. That is the whole argument for going. It is the same garden, four to five weeks earlier, at a fraction of the December crush.

The dates, and why they are unusually solid

For 2026 the venue has published the season explicitly: 2 October to 1 November 2026. That is one of the few Copenhagen seasonal dates with the year actually printed on the operator’s own page, so it is about as firm as this kind of information gets. It is roughly a five-week run, and it sits in the gap between the summer season and the Christmas season — the garden is closed in between, which surprises people who assume it runs year-round. It does not: Tivoli is a seasonal park and shuts entirely between seasons.

What the season actually is

The garden is replanted for autumn and dressed in tens of thousands of pumpkins, straw and autumnal colour, with a lighting scheme built for eeriness rather than warmth. It is a family-facing Halloween rather than a horror event for most of the grounds — the atmosphere is closer to an autumn harvest festival with a dark edge than to a haunted-house park — though there are dedicated scare attractions for those who want them.

The practical difference from December is crowd density. October is noticeably lighter across the board, with one exception: the Danish autumn school holiday week, which falls inside the season and fills the grounds with local families. If you can dodge that week you will have the quietest visit of any season.

The ride-pass exclusion nobody mentions

Here is a detail worth knowing before you spend more than you need to. The operator’s own listing for the combined entry and ride pass states that the Ride Pass does not include certain seasonal rides, and specifically does not grant access to the Haunted House and Villa Vendetta during the Halloween season.

In other words: the two attractions most obviously associated with Halloween are the two the Halloween-season ride pass excludes. If your reason for buying the more expensive combination was the scare attractions, it will not do what you want. Buy the standard entry ticket and pay for those separately, or buy entry plus rides only if it is the coasters you are after — including Rutschebanen, the wooden coaster built in 1914 and still braked by a man riding along on board, which is one of the oldest continuously operating wooden coasters anywhere.

October weather, and what it means for the plan

October in Copenhagen is cool and wet rather than cold — a proper rain jacket beats a heavy coat. Daylight is still reasonable at the start of the month and drops fast: by the end of October, sunset has fallen back towards five in the afternoon, and after the clocks change it collapses towards four. Since the season’s lighting is the point, this actually works in your favour — you do not have to wait until nine at night for it to look good, as you would in a European summer.

The indoor fallbacks are the same ones that save a December trip: the palaces at Christiansborg and Rosenborg, the Home of Carlsberg, and the covered food halls. All are a short metro ride from the garden, and all are covered by the city card if you are buying one.

Should you swap December for October?

If the Christmas markets themselves are the reason you are coming — the stalls, the gløgg, the lights on Nyhavn — then no. Those do not exist in October, and no amount of pumpkins substitutes for them. Our Christmas market guide is the page you want.

But if what you actually want is the garden — the illuminations, the rides, the atmosphere of the place — then October gives you the same venue with shorter queues, easier flights, cheaper accommodation and a season most people never consider. And if your dates are genuinely flexible, note that the Christmas season opens 13 November 2026, so late autumn offers a third option: arrive in the gap week and you get neither, which is the one mistake to avoid.
